The Terrace of Saint Lazarus.

The Costa del Sol University Hospital — part of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) under the Regional Ministry of Health, Presidency and Emergencies of the Government of Andalusia — and the Fundación San Lázaro España, together with the Grand Priory of Spain, have formalised a partnership agreement whose primary aim is to improve the wellbeing and comfort of children hospitalised at the centre.

The initiative seeks to humanise the stay of paediatric patients by creating a welcoming, restful space for play and recreation that lifts their spirits and supports their recovery.

The work

The core of the agreement is the conversion of the roof of the walkway linking buildings A and B on the hospital's fifth floor. With direct access from ward 5100, this space will become an open-air recreation area for children admitted to paediatrics, and will be named “The Terrace of Saint Lazarus.” On completion a commemorative plaque will mark the Fundación San Lázaro's charitable donation, which funds the project in full.

A public, verifiable framework

The agreement was signed by the managing director of the Costa del Sol University Hospital, Antonio Luis Cansino Osuna — by delegation of the SAS managing director, Valle García Sánchez — and by the president of the Fundación San Lázaro, Iván de Arteaga y del Alcázar. It sits within the strategic lines of the IV Andalusian Health Plan, the Quality Plan of the Andalusian Public Health System and the SAS Citizen Participation Action Plan. A joint Participation and Monitoring Committee, drawn equally from both institutions, has been established to oversee it.

The project directly benefits the children treated in the unit, which has twenty inpatient beds and five more in the Paediatric Day Hospital. In 2025 the unit recorded close to 500 admissions of children under 14, with an average stay of 3.1 days.
