Membership is by invitation and by service. Practice varies between jurisdictions — some welcome enquiries openly — but the path is always the same: service first.

What membership is

Membership in the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is a personal commitment to the Order's hospitaller mission — through service, through giving, and through participation in the life of a national jurisdiction.

How the path works

  1. Inquiry. A first conversation with the relevant jurisdiction's office — typically the country in which the candidate resides.
  2. Acquaintance. Participation in the jurisdiction's hospitaller activity over a period — sometimes a year or more.
  3. Consideration. Review by the jurisdiction's governing chapter.
  4. Investiture. Formal admission, in person, before existing members.

What is asked

A working commitment to the Order's mission and to the work of its jurisdiction. The specific contribution — of time, of professional skill, or of giving — varies by member, by jurisdiction, and by season of life. There is no single requirement.

The Order is Christian and ecumenical in character. As part of considering an application, a certificate of Christian baptism is requested.
